Writing with the Tarot
The Moon Part Two: Dreaming with David Lynch
Hitting the heart is a free and easy way to support this publication.
Every summer is the hottest summer on record lately.
Since my mother was diagnosed with lymphoma in June, this summer has flown by on harpy wings of rage and grief. It has been a summer of medical appointments and ER scares, sweaty treks through Boston in endless heat waves, two surgeries, and getting stuck underground in the subway during which I felt like I could not breathe.
We drove under the Aquarius full moon to the ER. My mother had the grace to look up and say, “How beautiful. The moon is with us.”
Two months after the diagnosis she has finally been able to begin treatment. Thankfully, she is tolerating it well.
One of the moon’s many meanings is dreams, and the importance of paying attention to your dreams. In my upcoming class Blue Rose: Writing the Dream Image, we will mine our dreams as a source of inspiration.
In the meantime, please enjoy this FREE Writing with the Tarot lesson. You can access Writing with the Tarot The Moon Part 2: Dreaming with David Lynch on my You Tube channel or below.
In this video, we also discuss Carmen Maria Machado’s speculative memoir In the Dream House, as well as Ariana Reines’ New Moon Report. There is also a bonus dream prompt at the end.
PROMPT:
Begin a piece with one of these lines from New Moon Report by Ariana Reines.
I turn into an animal to do what I do.
I may have to become some other kind of animal for a while.
I don’t want simply to cling to the old modes of gathering… to the werewolfhood and womanhood to which my adulthood amounted.
OR one of these lines from In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado
I daresay you have heard of the Dream House? It is, as you know, a real place.
In dreams, it sits behind a green door, for reasons you have never understood. The door was not green.
Be sure to credit the writer with “After Ariana Reines” or “After Carmen Maria Machado” in your title.
